Sumgin Buttress ( English ) is a striking and around 1100 m high rock massif in the East Antarctic Coatsland . It rises about 4 km southwest of the Charpentier Pyramid on the west side of the Herbert Mountains in the Shackleton Range .
The United States Navy photographed it from the air in 1967. The British Antarctic Survey carried out a survey of the area between 1968 and 1971. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1971 after the Russian geologist Mikhail Ivanovich Sumgin (1873-1942), a pioneer in permafrost research .
