The Summer Lake is a shallow, endorheic lake in Lake County in the US state of Oregon , who as Natron is classified. So it is both particularly alkaline and salty . For the most part, it is more like a march than a lake. Only when the water level is high does the lake have a surface of 153 km 2 , while it is 24 km long and 8 km wide. The maximum depth can then be up to 2.1 m. The mean water surface is at an altitude of 1265  m .

The lake is located in the Summer Lake Basin named after him , one of the many trenches of the Great Basin in the Basin and Range region. It forms the westernmost part of this trench, immediately adjacent the Winter Ridge , one of the clumps , rises by almost 900 meters. The difference in altitude was caused by a displacement at a stretch fracture during the creation of the Basin and Range Province.

The only tributary of the lake is the 11 km long Ana River , which is fed by springs with strongly fluctuating discharge on the slopes of the Winter Ridge and flows into the lake from the north-west. The lake also collects surface runoff from its immediate surroundings.

The lake is located in the historical home range of the Paiute Indians. The first white man to see him was John Charles Fremont in December 1843 . He came up a ridge on a mapping expedition from the west and looked down into the plain. The contrast between the cold, snow-covered mountains and the lake sparkling in the sun in the flat semi-desert prompted him to name the ridge Winter Range and Lake Summer Lake .

Summer Lake and nearby Albert Lake are the only remaining water-bearing remains of prehistoric Lake Chewaucan , which covered large parts of central Oregon in the Pleistocene at the end of the last Ice Age . Around the lake there is a swamp with numerous species of birds and other wild animals. In the Paisley Caves southeast of the lake in its basin , 14,300-year-old human remains have been found, which are among the most important evidence of the beginnings of settlement in America .
