Sunrise Senior Living is an operator of nursing homes , which in Tysons Corner ( Virginia is at home). The company operates over 440 retirement homes worldwide.

history

The company's founders, Paul and Terry Klaassen, both had long-term care experiences while growing up. Terry and her family learned about the institutional nature of nursing homes in the United States while Paul was visiting his grandparents who lived in the Netherlands . After they got married, both volunteered in nursing homes in the United States and met many seniors who were dissatisfied with the institutionalized care in these homes.

The couple decided to adopt the Dutch model of long-term care for the elderly as a business model. They sold their house and bought a recently closed nursing home that they were renovating. In the first business year, they took care of the residents themselves. Word of this new alternative in care for the elderly quickly got around and was called "Assisted Living".

To meet the growing demand, the Klaassens opened two more Sunrise homes in the mid-1980s. In 1987 the first Victorian villa-style home was opened. This was one of the first nursing homes built specifically for this purpose in the United States.

In the spring of 2003 the company changed its name from "Sunrise Assisted Living" to "Sunrise Senior Living" in order to represent the expansion of the range of services.

Sunrise in Germany

Up until 2010, Sunrise operated seven retirement homes in Germany in Hamburg , Bonn , Frankfurt am Main , Königstein im Taunus , Oberursel (Taunus) , Wiesbaden and Munich . The two locations in Reinbek and Hanover were closed in 2008 due to a lack of profitability. Since September 1, 2010, Sunrise has no longer operated the eight German Sunrise domiciles for senior citizens , but Kursana under the “Kursana Villa” brand. At the Reinbek and Hanover locations, Kursana Villa restarted operations on October 1, 2010 after an interruption of one and a half years.
