The Supercore refrigerated ship was designed in the late 1960s by the Norwegian shipyard Bergens Mekaniske Verksted from Bergen for the Israeli fruit export company Maritime Fruit Carriers (MFC) from Haifa. The type ending " ... core " is derived from the Hebrew word for "cold".
details
The Supercore design was based on the smaller core basic type from the same shipyard and, with 16 units built by five different shipyards, is also one of the most successful designs in the relevant segment. The ships were among the largest of their kind at the time of construction.
The focus of the draft was on the fruit transport, mainly the citrus fruit and banana transport, for the latter the ships received the side banana doors and the large fans for air exchange in the Central American loading ports. In later years, the versatile ships were also employed in the transport of a large number of fruits as well as other refrigerated and frozen cargoes (fish, meat).
The supercores can be divided into three groups due to the different loading gear and a few other details.
- The eight "basic" super cores had conventional loading booms . Six of these ships had additional swing booms from the Swedish manufacturer Hallen at hatches 2 and 3. Only the two ships built for P&O, Wild Auk and Wild Avocet , did not have any additional boom trees.
- The six Supercore ships of the British shipping company Blue Star Line were designated by the British shipping company as A-Class (A-Class) due to the naming. They had cranes instead of the loading boom and a particularly large chimney. These ships were initially engaged in a five-year charter by Standard Fruit Corporation in the export of bananas from Costa Rica, Honduras and Colombia to the United States and Europe.
- The final two Geest Supercores. These were converted order options from the Blue Star Line. The ships had one hatch less and were given a mixed harness made of cranes and trees. Outwardly, they also differed from the rest of the type by the Geest-typical double chimneys.
Three ships of the type sailed at times under the German flag. As Morillo and Cherry of the Frigomaris reefer shipping company and the Brunsland of the shipping company Bruns from mid-1976, they formed the group of the largest German reefer ships at that time. A large number of the ships of the type were in charter with the Swedish Salén shipping company until the MFC collapsed in 1976 .
