The supraspinatus muscle ( Latin for "upper bone muscle") is a skeletal muscle in the shoulder area . It runs almost horizontally from the upper portion of the back of the shoulder blade below the collarbone to the joint head of the humerus . It is largely covered by the trapezius muscle . The supraspinatus, teres minor , infraspinatus and subscapularis muscles attach to the upper arm with a common tendon plate. In humans, this compound is known as the rotator cuff , which fixes the head of the humerus in its flat joint socket. The cattle supraspinatus muscle is marketed as " false fillet ".
function
The supraspinatus muscle assists the deltoid muscle in spreading the arm away from the body ( abduction ). Because the attachment tendon has grown together with the joint capsule of the shoulder joint, he tensions it and prevents folds of the capsule from becoming trapped when the arm is raised.
clinic
Pathological changes in the tendon of the supraspinatus muscle are a common cause of shoulder pain. The tendon is then mostly inflamed. The most common cause of this inflammation is an entrapment of the tendon. This is called impingement in medicine . The tendon can also tear partially or completely (→ rotator cuff tear ).
