Surendrajeet Singh Ahluwalia (often just SS Ahluwalia ; born July 4, 1951 in Jaykay Nagar , Bardhaman District , West Bengal ) is an Indian politician of the Indian National Congress (INC) and later of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was a member of the Rajya Sabha between 1986 and 1998 and again from 2000 to 2012 , and from 1995 to 1996 Minister of State in the Ministry of Urban Affairs and Employment and Parliamentary Affairs. He has been a member of the Lok Sabha since 2014 .

Life

After attending St. Joseph School in Asansol and Bidhan Chandra College , Ahluwalia first began an undergraduate degree at the University of Burdwan , which he completed with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.). He completed another postgraduate study of law at the University of Calcutta with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and then worked as a social worker and political scientist.

On July 7, 1986, Ahluwalia became a member of the Rayja Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament , for the first time for the Indian National Congress (INC). After his re-election on July 8, 1992, he was a member until July 7, 1998. During his parliamentary membership he was a member of various committees of the upper house and was appointed by Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao on September 15, 1995 as Minister of State in the Minister for Urban Affairs and Employment and as Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs in the latter's government , to which he was appointed until May 16, 1996 belonged to.

Ahluwalia was elected for a new term on April 3, 2000 as a member of the Rajya Sabha and, after being re-elected in April 2006, was a member of this until 2012. During this time he was a member of the Finance Committee between September 2000 and August 2004 and a member of the Information Technology Committee from August 2002 to August 2004. He was also a member of the Privilege Committee from January 2003 to July 2004. He was then a member of the Interior Committee between August 2004 and August 2009 and a member of the House Committee from August 2004 to April 2006 . After serving on the Rules of Procedure Committee between June and September 2006, he rejoined the Privilege Committee in September 2006. He was also a member of the Finance Committee between September 2007 and August 2009 and became a member of the Ethics Committee in July 2009. In 2012 he lost his mandate in the Rajya Sabha.

In the elections in April and May 2014 , Ahluwalia, who had since joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as a member, was elected a member of Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian parliament. In this he has been a member of the committee for public accounts since August 14, 2014 and chairman of the committee for privileges since September 1, 2014. He was also a member of the Finance Committee and has also been a member of the General Affairs Committee since January 29, 2015.

His marriage to Monica Ahluwalia on February 2, 1972 resulted in three sons and two daughters.
