Survivor R is the manufacturer's name for an MRAP military truck from Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles , the military vehicle division of Rheinmetall Defense.

vehicle

Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles is a joint venture between MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG and Rheinmetall AG . The Survivor R was developed in cooperation with the Austrian manufacturer Franz Achleitner Fahrzeugbau und Reifenenzentrum GMBH, which has been marketing its PMV Survivor II vehicle since 2009.

The vehicle should be able to transport people protected through rough terrain and barricades.

In order to save costs and because of the availability of spare parts, the vehicle was developed on the basis of a commercial MAN TGM off-road truck with a total mass of up to 17 tons. The original driver's cab is dismantled by Achleitner, and a protected monocoque cab is placed on the resulting rolling chassis.

The "Survivor R" is powered by a water-cooled 6.9 liter 6 cylinder diesel engine from MAN. This is available in the EURO 3 emissions standards and EURO 6 standards and has an output of 243 kW at 1250 Nm torque. A MAN Tipmatic gearbox is installed as standard.

The vehicle is designed such that it through a C-130 Hercules luftverlegbar is. The “Survivor R” is almost twice as heavy as the Mowag Eagle, which was designed for military use .

Armor and other security

The vehicle has a monocoque cabin. The armor is designed to withstand fire from an AK-47 assault rifle . A protective ventilation system protects the occupants against nuclear, biological and chemical warfare agents. A large number of options such as a clearing blade are available from the manufacturer.

Armament

A launching system for smoke grenades or tear gas as well as a modular weapon station with double armament that can be operated and reloaded inside can be upgraded. With the special task force of Saxony in December 2017 police unit has been equipped with a launcher system for fog and irritants at Survivor R.

variants

Vehicle variants are extensions as

  • Ambulance vehicle
  • Armed vehicle with machine gun hatch

Areas of application

In Rheinmetall's marketing, the vehicle is recommended for a number of military and police applications. As a police vehicle, it is intended to "fight riots", as an armored ambulance vehicle, as a logistics vehicle, as a command vehicle or as a transport vehicle.

costs

The vehicle costs between 300,000 and 500,000 euros , depending on the specification . RMMV advertises that the use of MAN standard parts allows the vehicle to be serviced in normal MAN truck workshops. Competitors in the same area of application are e.g. B. the US Cheetah MMPV , the French Bastion Patsas and the South African Casspir .

criticism

In the case of the execution with "irritant gas or smoke grenades" and "modular weapons station with double armament", it is questionable whether the police may be equipped in such a way with armaments against the population. The police union saw this in early 2018 without concern.
