Susanne Neumann

Susanne "Susi" Neumann (born May 29, 1959 in Gelsenkirchen ; † January 13, 2019 ) was a German author , trade unionist and home cleaner . She became known as a critic of the SPD .

Life

Susanne Neumann came from a family of civil servants . She obtained secondary school leaving certificate , then began an apprenticeship as a decorator , which she broke off at the age of 17 when she became pregnant, and from 1981 worked as a house cleaner in Gelsenkirchen .

Neumann joined the Bau-Steine-Erden industrial union on Labor Day in 1984 , which was merged into the IG Bauen-Agrar-Umwelt in 1996 . As a trade unionist, she was a member of the Federal Tariff Commission , chairman of the Federal Group building cleaning, chairman of the district branch of Emscher-Lippe-Aa and member of the Trade Union Advisory Council .

Neumann attracted media attention in 2009 when she staged a strike with a “cleaning Olympiad” and a “toilet brush throwing”. She was several times a guest on talk shows on television , back then as a member of the Left Party . However, she first gained real fame with her appearance on the Anne Will program on April 17, 2016 on the subject of "Low wages today, old-age poverty tomorrow - is the welfare state failing?", In which she sharply criticized the SPD .

Shortly after the broadcast was recorded, the SPD politician Hannelore Kraft , who had also participated in the panel discussion, managed to win Neumann as a new SPD member. At the values ​​conference of the SPD in May 2016, Neumann discussed with party chairman Sigmar Gabriel , whereby she sharply criticized the excess of fixed-term employment contracts in her industry, too low pensions for long-term contributors to the statutory pension insurance and the cooperation of the SPD with the Union in the Federal government exercised. She gained further notoriety because of her clear, direct language and her strong criticism of what she believed to be a lack of social justice .

In August 2018, she supported the founding of the left-wing gathering movement Stand Up . At the beginning of December 2018, she left the SPD again. In an interview on leaving the SPD, Neumann spoke about her cancer and that she had given up chemotherapy . Neumann died on January 13, 2019 at the age of 59 of her cancer.

Publications

In the book Frau Neumann skin on the plaster - Why we work for a lifetime and still impoverish (Bastei Lübbe Verlag, February 2017), she and co-author Andreas Hock explain the social conditions in Germany from their point of view: How the welfare state Germany has had its day, why people have to work in several professions, but still do not have enough money, and how the middle class is falling away. They also provide information on poverty in old age. Susanne Neumann also wrote about her own experiences and was therefore perceived as a mouthpiece for those who work but still cannot make ends meet.
