Sutokoba (spelling variants: Sutukaba or rarely Sutuko , Setuko ; name variant Boye Kunda ) is a town in the West African state of Gambia .

According to a calculation for 2013, about 2,972 inhabitants live there, the result of the last published census from 1993 was 2,148.

geography

Sutokoba, about 26 meters above sea level, on the north bank of the Gambia River, is in the Upper River Region (URR), Wuli District , on North Bank Road about 31 kilometers from Basse Santa Su , the seat of the URR administrative unit. In a south-westerly direction, Badja Kunda is 4.8 kilometers away and further in this direction is 6.8 kilometers from Sutokoba Fattatenda directly on the river bank.

history

At the beginning of the 15th century, Sutukoba was an important flourishing trading town of the Wuli Empire, which had belonged to the Jolof Empire . The place had an estimated 4000 inhabitants at that time. Later in the early 17th century, Portuguese traders had acquired gold and other goods in the still bustling trading town (under the name Setuko ).

Relics of the old city have been found near the village. Archaeological excavations are still planned (as of 1997).
