North Bank Road
The North Bank Road or Main North Bank Road ( German Norduferstraße ), from July 2007 with the official name July 22nd Highway , is a trunk road in the West African state of Gambia .
description
The Gambia is a long, narrow state and follows the course of the Gambia River in West Africa from east to west for about 480 kilometers . There is a strip of land on either side that is 6 to 26 kilometers wide. The river used to be the main route of transport in this area. Until the mid-1980s, there was a larger passenger ferry , the Lady Chilel Jawara , which sailed the river. When it sank, long-distance traffic shifted completely to South Bank Road.
The North Bank Road, starting from Barra on the coast with a ferry connection to the capital Banjul , connects the important cities on the northern bank of the Gambia River to the largest city Basse Santa Su in the east.
The North Bank Road is now completely paved up to the small ferry terminal Lamin Koto near Janjanbureh . On July 27, 2007, the Farafenni-Lamin Koto section, which was completed in September 2006, was inaugurated by Vice President Isatou Njie Saidy and named July 22nd Highway . The 440 million Dalasi (around 12.6 million euros) project was financed by the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) and the Arab Fund for Development .
It is now in significantly better condition than the South Bank Road , which has been considered very difficult to drive since 2003. Alternatively, long-distance traffic in Gambia runs from Banjul and Kombo-St. Mary Area now partly on Norduferstraße. In addition, it is accepted that you have to cross the river twice with a ferry. The renovation of South Bank Road has already started in parts.
