history

The history of the city of Suzano can be traced back to the year 1690, in which the Jesuit Father Francisco Baruel came to the region in order to fulfill his mission of proselytizing Indians. Shortly afterwards, this father had a small chapel built around which a small settlement developed over the years. It would be another 195 years before the chapel was elevated to a church. In 1895, due to a storm, the church was completely destroyed. It was only with the arrival of the Bianchi family, an old Italian aristocratic family who decided to donate the new church, that it was rebuilt. The family, with the head of the family Roberto Bianchi and his wife Ernestina Maria de Jesus Bianchi, who came from an old family, contributed to the preservation of the village, as they ensured brisk trade through their estate and were thus able to create a balance that resulted in the neighborhood developing city of Suzano.

The development or foundation of today's city of Suzano can be traced back to Marques Antonio Figueira, who had been in charge of the expansion of the imperial "Estrada de Ferro" since 1879. This was precisely the reason why Marques Antonio Figueira came to the region of today's city. He quickly decided to build his villa, the later "Casãrao Figueira". He moved there with his wife Maria de Siqueira, who came from an old colonialist family (from Jacareí), later Marquesa Maria Figueira, in 1886. He took his brother Marques Thomé Figueira with him on his return trip from Portugal to the region ; both with the vision of founding a city. Together with the Conde Romariz, both decided in 1890 to have the city maps drawn up. The decision for the name of the new city fell on "Vila da Concórdia", later changed to "Vila da Piedade". In 1896 the town church, founded as a family church by Marques Antonio Figueira, was consecrated to St. Sebastian , who was also proclaimed the town's patron. The Figueira family took care of the construction of roads and public buildings to increase the attraction of the city. Not only the Figueiras, but the joint cooperation of the Figueira and Bianchi families is the reason for the success of the development towards the city. The two families, which were connected not much later through the marriage of the eldest son Felicio Bianchi and Maria Marquesa Figueira, led the fortunes of the city until the 1930s, when things changed, and the urban population became more and more influential won and stood up for the independence of the city of Mogi das Cruzes. But it should be noted that the attempt to cut the cord from the Figueira family already took place with the renaming of the city to "Suzano" on December 11, 1908. The climax of the cutting of the cord was the forced donation of the Figueiras town and family church to the Catholic Church in 1936. The church itself was completely demolished in 1956 to make room for a larger church. Only the pews survived and are still to be found in the church donated by the Bianchis.

The city's citizenship achieved the city's independence on April 2, 1949. On this day, the starting shot was given for the rapid settlement of industries, including the pharmaceutical and chemical company Hoechst from the 1970s (today managed by Clariant ), Suzano Papel e Celulose , Nadir Figueiredo , Orsa, (now International Paper ), Nalco do Brasil, Cerâmica Gyotoku, Tsuzuki, CBD Mecânica Industrial, Komatsu and Formica. Due to the proximity to São Paulo, there is still enormous urban growth, starting with four people in 1886, today there are 279,520 inhabitants.

Suzano hit the headlines internationally on March 13, 2019, when Professor Raul Brasil - including the two perpetrators - died and at least 16 other people were injured in a rampage at the Escola Estadual .
