Sven Simon Prize

The Sven Simon Prize is an award for the “best sports photo” of the year.

The award is named after Axel Springer jr. (1941–1980), son of the publisher Axel Springer , who himself had found international recognition as a photographer under the pseudonym Sven Simon . The journalist and former editor-in-chief of Welt am Sonntag died in 1980 at the age of 38.

In memory of Simon, Die Welt am Sonntag donated the Sven Simon Prize , which was awarded to young people who were committed to nature conservation for 20 years. The award, endowed with a total of 14,000 euros, has been presented for the best sports photos of the year since 1999. The jury, chaired by Axel Sven Springer , the son of Axel Springer Jr., includes well-known athletes, including Boris Becker , Franz Beckenbauer , Birgit Fischer , Bernhard Langer , Heiner Brand , Heike Drechsler , Franziska van Almsick , Katarina Witt and Rosi Mittermaier .

After the award of the award, the award-winning photos will be exhibited in Berlin's Axel-Springer-Passage.
