Kai Pfaffenbach

Kai Pfaffenbach (born December 7, 1970 in Hanau ) is a German photo journalist who works for the international news agency Reuters .

Life

After graduating from high school at the Franciscan high school in Kreuzburg in Großkrotzenburg (1990) and unfinished history and political studies, he first completed an internship at the Aschaffenburg private broadcaster Radio Primavera . Since his school days he has worked as a freelance photographer for local media, since 1993 almost exclusively for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung . In 1995 he started working as a freelancer in the Frankfurt office of the Reuters news agency. He has been employed there as a photojournalist since 1998.

Awards

In 2013, Pfaffenbach and the Russian referee Andrej Schukow were awarded the German Sports Fair Play Prize in the Sports category. Pfaffenbach has won numerous national and international awards for its journalistic photography. For his photo of Mario Götze's winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final , he was honored with the Sven Simon Prize from Axel Springer Verlag. In addition to numerous prizes from the Professional Association of German Sports Photographers (VDS) and the German Association of Journalists , Pfaffenbach received a World Press Photo Award for his picture of smiling Usain Bolt in the semifinals of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games . In 2020 Pfaffenbach will be part of a team of 11 Reuters photographers who were awarded the Pulitzer Prize in the “Breaking News Photography” category for their coverage of the events in Hong Kong .
