Sven Beuter (* December 12, 1972 ; † February 20, 1996 in Brandenburg an der Havel ) was a German roofer who was attacked by a neo-Nazi on February 15, 1996 and seriously injured due to belonging to the punk scene in Brandenburg an der Havel that he died of his injuries in hospital five days later. He was a victim of right-wing extremist violence in the Federal Republic of Germany .

Life

Beuter spent his childhood in a home, among other places, because the relationship with his father was considered very difficult. He learned the profession of roofer and then financed his life by doing odd jobs and receiving social assistance. Sven Beuter was repeatedly the victim of neo-Nazi attacks. He was attacked with a baseball bat in 1993 and suffered a fractured skull with injuries to the brain . As a result, he had to learn to speak again at the Brandenburg State Hospital. After this attack, he was slightly mentally handicapped . In another attack in 1994, his right arm was so injured that it was stiff from then on.

The course of events

The attack by the physically superior neo-Nazi Sascha L. on Sven Beuter occurred on the evening of February 15, 1996 in Grabenstrasse in Brandenburg an der Havel. Sven Beuter was sitting in his apartment that evening with his friends. They drank beer and watched television. When the beer ran out, Sven Beuter went to get new one.

L. was in town with two friends at the same time. They stopped at a locality on Fischerstrasse, where they drank three bottles of schnapps and four bottles of beer each. Thereupon the ways of the three parted and L. met Sven Beuter on Grabenstrasse. According to the perpetrator, he attacked Sven Beuter after he insulted him as a "Nazi pig". He hit his victim, who, according to forensic medical reports, must have quickly passed out on the ground. Typical signs of defense on the arms could not be documented. The perpetrator then dragged Sven Beuter around 50 meters behind him, only to hit him further on Havelstrasse with hits and kicks. These events are documented by a witness who now intervened together with his son-in-law. The two managed to overpower the perpetrator and hold him until the police arrived. They should first have checked the personal details of the helpers before they called an ambulance for Sven Beuter, who was lying on the ground. In the meantime, a pool of blood about half a meter in diameter formed around the victim's body. The perpetrator was taken to the police station, where his blood was drawn. Then he could walk again. Meanwhile , the ambulance brought the hypothermic Sven Beuter to the hospital, where he died on February 20, 1996. The injuries documented by forensic medicine included a multiple rupture of the liver , a broken nose, various hematomas all over the body, a six centimeter long open wound on the eye, pronounced cerebral edema , a broken jaw and many other injuries. Brain death, which occurred five days later, was caused by a kick in the left cheek. The perpetrator was arrested only after the death of his victim and remained in custody until the trial.

The trial

The trial against 21-year-old Sascha L., who came from the village of Damsdorf near Brandenburg an der Havel in the municipality of Kloster Lehnin , took place at the Potsdam Regional Court on November 4, 1996. The charge was initially for the murder of Sven Beuter.

In the course of the three-day court hearing, the accused, who had been known to the authorities as a right-wing extremist violent perpetrator due to several criminal charges, had a "diffuse fascist worldview" and close ties to the neo-Nazi scene in Brandenburg an der Havel. The brutality of the actions of the accused has been documented by the fact that a coroner Beuters injuries such likened that commonly occur in severe car accidents. Not even after Beuter passed out that the defendant had let go of his victim.

Since a lower motive could not be proven with certainty as a murder characteristic and the accused was considered to be less responsible due to a proven blood alcohol content of 2.33 per mille at the time of the crime , a conviction for manslaughter and a sentence of seven years and six months in prison was ultimately given .

After the fact

Commemoration of the 20th anniversary of Sven Beuter's death, February 20, 2016

There have been annual commemorative events since the murder of Sven Beuter. The first took place exactly one month after the brutal attack on the young punk with mohawk instead. On March 15, around 100 people gathered for an unannounced demonstration in downtown Brandenburg an der Havel. However, this was dissolved by the police.

On the first day of death, the Antifa Jugend Brandenburg organized an “anti-fascist demonstration against fascist structures and right-wing violence” in the Havel city. During the memorial march with around 350 participants, there were violent clashes between anti-fascists and the police. Various windows were broken and some cars were set on fire. The organizers named the constant provocation of local neo-Nazis in the immediate vicinity of the event as the cause of the riots.

Also in 1998 the Antifa Jugend Brandenburg organized a memorial rally in the theater park, which is in the immediate vicinity of the crime scene, on the occasion of the death of Sven Beuter. Around 120 people attended the wreath-laying ceremony. Four Brandenburg neo-Nazis planned to attack the rally. They hide on a roof and wanted to shoot the participants from there. However, this was prevented by the police, who were massively present in the city after the riots in 1997.

On the eleventh anniversary of his death, the city of Brandenburg an der Havel announced that it was donating a commemorative plaque for Sven Beuter. On this is his name, the dates of birth and death and the words "Victim of right-wing violence". The plate was laid in front of the house at Havelstrasse 13 on May 9, 2007. Sascha L. dragged his defenseless victim to this house and here the perpetrator was overwhelmed by the two helpers and handed over to the police.

Since the relocation, commemorative events have been held annually by the party Die Linke and Left Youth [solid] . Mayor Steffen Scheller declared in 2011 “that the city no longer sees any reason to hold such an event.” Since 2012, the supra-regional anti-fascist network Brandenburg / Havel - Premnitz - Rathenow has also been involved in organizing the memorial event.

In 2016, the Brandenburg city council discussed commemorating Sven Beuter by naming a street or a square after him. Appropriate proposals did not find a majority.
