Svensk HandbollsElit ( SHE for short ) has been Sweden's top division in women's handball since the 1989/90 season . Before the 2016/17 season, the league was referred to as Elitserien i handboll för damer .

The first championship was won in 1951 by the Gothenburg club Kvinnliga IK Sport . Current champion (2019) is IK Sävehof .

Between 1951 and 1967 the championship was held in the tournament system. In 1968 the best four played the championship in a final game ( slutspel ). From 1969 to 1973 the championship was held again in tournament form. The final game has been back since 1977.
