Svjedok - The Witness is an Austrian documentary whose content is based on a true story from the Bosnian War in 1992.

action

This film is based on a true story that happened during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Some of the people involved in the film had to go through this terrible event themselves. Rajif Begić, the witness, acted personally in the film and acted himself. With his strong will, commitment and courage, he confronted the Serbian war criminals and testified publicly against them before the The Hague Tribunal and the Supreme Court of Bosnia-Herzegovina.

On May 31, 1992 his village Begići and the neighboring villages were attacked and captured by Chetniks . All the men were crammed together and had to start the march towards the Vrhpolje bridge. On the way to the bridge, some of his neighbors were murdered in cold blood by Jadranko Palija, including his younger brother. On the bridge the prisoners were lined up and executed one by one. They were forced to jump off the bridge and into the water. They were then shot in the water by the Chetniks. Before Rajif Begić had to jump, the soldier Nenad Kaurin ordered him to open his mouth and put the barrel of his machine gun in his mouth ... He had no choice ...

Nothing is learned about the fate or a possible conviction of the immediate perpetrators from that time. In the end credits, reference is only made to the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia , which began its work in December 1994 and brought a total of 161 charges, as well as to the long overdue arrest of the last two great Serbian war criminals in 2011: Ratko Mladić , the most wanted war criminal Europe , on May 26th, and by Goran Hadžić on July 20th.

Others

Many of the actors were contemporary witnesses of this event. After the success of Most - The Bridge , the director's interest in the truth grew. What happened to the director's uncle and the other civilians? With Rajif Begić's statement, Haris Bilajbegovic came closer and closer to the truth. The interview with the witness and the film Svjedok - The Witness came full circle after 20 years.

With the support of the family and the local people, Svjedok - The Witness was realized in the summer of 2009 within two weeks. The Viennese film production company illuminati film supported Bilajbegović in the production. Robert Palfrader dubbed the film German.

Due to a lack of financial resources, submissions to international film festivals had to be terminated prematurely. The film was awarded several national and international film prizes and was u. a. Nominated for the German Human Rights Film Award in 2012.

It is a major concern of the author and director Bilajbegović to erect a memorial for all known and unknown war victims and their relatives.
