Swami Kuvalayananda (actually Jagannath Ganesh Gune ; born August 30, 1883 in Dabhoi ; † April 18, 1966 ) was an Indian yoga master who was significantly involved in the popularization of Hatha Yoga and was one of the first to scientifically investigate the physiological effects of Hathayoga.

Life

Jagannath Ganesh Gune was born on August 30, 1883 in Dabhoi in what was then the princely state of Baroda . From 1907 to 1910 he trained with Rajaratna Manikrao gymnastics and fighting techniques, later became a student of Paramahamsa Shri Madhavadasaji (1789-1921) and thus a classmate of Shri Yogendra (1897-1989). In 1920 he first studied physiological effects on the body of hathayoga practices such as asana , pranayama , kriya and bandha at Baroda Hospital .

In 1924 he founded the Kaivalyadhama Institute in Lonavla ( Maharashtra ) with the aim of scientifically researching the effects of Hatha Yoga and developing therapeutic applications. The research is published in the journal Yoga Mimamsa, which has been published since this year . The institute also works with well-known scientists, such as the biologist JBS Haldane . In 1927 he was commissioned by the Mumbai government to develop methods for teaching yogic practices in classes at schools and universities.

Swami Kuvalayananda developed methods for teaching Hatha Yoga to larger groups, with drill being characteristic of his style. He was among the first to use Hatha Yoga for therapeutic purposes.

T. Krishnamacharya (1888–1989), one of the great pioneers of modern hatha yoga, was sent to the Kaivalyadhama Institute by the Maharaja of Mysore to observe the methods of Kuvalayananda.

One of his students was Armin Gottmann .
