The Swampy Plain River is a river in the southeast of the Australian state of New South Wales .
The river rises on the eastern slopes of Mount Kosciuszko and flows around the mountain clockwise in a semicircle, crossing the 2035 m high mountain lake Lake Cootapatamba .
From Mount Kosciuszko, the river continues its course northwards to the Khancoban Pondage , a reservoir that secures the water supply for the small town of Khancoban at its northern end. From the outlet of the reservoir, the river turns to the west and flows through a marshy plateau after which it was named. After a few kilometers it flows into the Murray River .
