Sybren Ruurds de Groot

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sybren Ruurds de Groot , mostly cited by SR de Groot, (born April 8, 1916 in Amsterdam , † May 9, 1994 ) was a Dutch physicist and one of the founders of statistical non-equilibrium physics.

Life

De Groot studied with JD van der Waals Junior at the University of Amsterdam and worked from 1942 to 1947 in the Van der Waals laboratory under A. Michels. During the German occupation he was involved in the resistance (group Amsterdam-Ost, in which Michels was one of the leaders). He received his doctorate on thermal diffusion under Cornelis Gorter at the University of Amsterdam in 1945 ( L'effet Soret: Diffusion thermique dans les phases condensées ). His dissertation was used in isotope separation and in 1947 he spent a year in Paris in the laboratory of Frédéric Joliot-Curie . In 1948 he became a lecturer and a year later professor at the University of Utrecht . From 1953 he was professor of theoretical physics at the University of Leiden , succeeding Hendrik Anthony Kramers . With his former doctoral student Peter Mazur , he founded the Lorentz Institute for Theoretical Physics there, and both initiated the Lorentz Chair for visiting professors in Leiden. From 1964 he was back at the University of Amsterdam, where he stayed until his retirement in 1984.

He had been a member of the Dutch Academy of Sciences since 1958 . In 1956 he was awarded an honorary doctorate at the University of Strasbourg , where he was visiting professor from 1958 to 1963. He was a knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion and Knight and later an officer in the French Legion of Honor .

He also wrote essays on literary issues in various Dutch newspapers, including a scathing criticism of Teilhard de Chardin in Holland's Maandblad .
