Sydney Schanberg

Sydney Hillel Schanberg (born January 17, 1934 in Clinton , Massachusetts , † July 9, 2016 in Poughkeepsie ) was an American journalist who was best known for his coverage of the war in Cambodia .

In 1976 he won the Pulitzer Prize for international coverage while working for the New York Times . He also won the George Polk Award for Outstanding Achievement in Journalism twice (1971 and 1974).

His book The Death and Life of Dith Pran, in which he describes the struggle for survival of his colleague Dith Pran under the terror regime of the Democratic Kampuchea of the Khmer Rouge , formed the basis for the film The Killing Fields (1984). In the film he is played by Sam Waterston .
