Sylvester Q. Cannon
Sylvester Quayle Cannon (born June 10, 1877 in Salt Lake City , Utah , † May 29, 1943 ) was an American clergyman and apostle of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints . As such, served in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles from 1939 until his death.
Life
Sylvester Quayle Cannon was the youngest of eleven children of George Q. Cannon and his first wife Elizabeth Hoagland. He graduated from the University of Utah and attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . After receiving a Master of Science degree in mining and metallurgy , he began his missionary work in the Netherlands and Belgium . In 1900, about a year after his arrival, he was appointed President of the Mission. In 1907 he returned to the Netherlands, this time accompanied by his wife and their two daughters, to serve again as mission president there.
On June 4, 1925, he succeeded Charles W. Nibley as Presiding Bishop and remained so until his appointment as an apostle. This took place on April 14, 1938. On October 6, 1939 he was accepted into the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. The time in between he was Associate to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles from April 6, 1938 to October 6, 1939 .
Cannon was a member of the Utah Society of Civil Engineering . He was also Chairman of the State Flood Commission of the Governor of Utah , was a member of the State Advisory Council for Unemployment and oversaw all engineering projects for Salt Lake City.
Cannon was married and had two daughters.
