Sylvester Tegetmeier (* in Hamburg ; † 1552 in Riga ) was a Protestant theologian and reformer from Livonia.

Life

Nothing is known about origin and youth. He studied at the University of Rostock , received his master's degree in 1519 and was first chaplain at St. Mary's Church , then preacher at St. Jacob . Here he must have already become familiar with the gospel through Joachim Slueter . When he returned in 1522 Riga came to the inheritance to bring his dead there brother, told him the spirit of the Reformation movement taken citizenship so much that on the side of he could the reputation not escape, Andreas Knöpken to contact . He was assigned to the archdeacon Knöpken as an assistant.

His contemporaries portray him as a fire spirit who was easily carried away and was able to go beyond the boundaries to be observed. A talented and eloquent man, he was able to bring great benefits to the Reformation in Riga, but also some danger. It is not clear whether he had a relationship with Andreas Bodenstein . He preached about evangelical freedom and zealous against the image service. This triggered the iconoclasm in Riga. The people removed the church utensils from the church, threw out the pictures and destroyed the corpse stones. It was only with difficulty that he succeeded in placating the excited people again.

Nevertheless, in 1522 the council appointed him as a preacher at the Jacobi Church . He gave himself up fully to this office. But he also tried to work for the Reformation in the country. At the Landtag in Wolmar in 1525 he accompanied the evangelical representatives and preached there daily. Here too he had arguments with Old Believers. When an anarchist movement started in Wolmar and later in Dorpat Melchior Hofmann , he tried to appease the community. In Dorpat he also worked out the church order.
