Sylvia Kalina

Sylvia Kalina (* 1947 in Bremen ) is a German linguist and translation scholar. She taught at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg at the Institute for Translation and Interpreting (IÜD) and at the University of Applied Sciences Cologne at the Institute for Translation and Multilingual Communication (ITMK).

Life

After her studies from 1966 to 1970 at the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITD) of the Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg the subjects English , French and the content subject law with graduation diploma interpreter, Kalina initially worked as a conference interpreter. From 1980 to 1999 she taught interpreting training in English at the IÜD of Heidelberg University and researched in the field of conference interpreting and interpretation didactics. In 1997 she received her doctorate. phil. with a dissertation on the subject of strategic processes in interpreting - theoretical principles, empirical studies, didactic consequences . In 1999 Kalina was appointed professor with the subject “Theory and Practice of Interpreting” and in 2004 with the subject “Multilingual Communication - Focus on Translation” at Cologne University of Applied Sciences, where she taught until her retirement in autumn 2012. Her main research interests at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences were interpretation didactics and quality assurance in interpreting. In 2009/10 she took on a visiting professorship at the University of Vienna and in 2011/12 and 2014 a teaching position at the University of Graz . She is involved in research projects on relay interpreting , quality assurance in interpreting and Improving Police and Legal Interpreting (ImPLI) and has been teaching at Heidelberg University and Cologne University of Applied Sciences since 2012.
