Heidrun Gerzymisch (born May 8, 1944 in Gusow ) is a German translation scholar and professor at Saarland University .

Life and way

Heidrun Gerzymisch studied at the Institute for Translation and Interpreting (IÜD) of the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and at the Holborn College of Law, Languages ​​and Commerce in London (today: University of Westminster ) with German and American degrees as a qualified translator (1969) from Heidelberg University and as a Bachelor of International Business Administration (1976) from Schiller International University (London Campus).

After practical work in Germany and abroad as well as teaching at the Institute for Translation and Interpreting at the University of Heidelberg from 1979 to 1993, he received his doctorate in 1986 at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (Department of Translation, Linguistics and Cultural Studies) with Karl-Heinz Stoll (English literary studies ), Jörn Albrecht (general linguistics / linguistics) and Hans J. Vermeer ( applied linguistics / linguistics).

Her habilitation with the award of the venia legendi for translation studies (English) took place in 1992 at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg (reviewers: Kurt Kohn, Jörn Albrecht and Herbert Ernst Wiegand ). Heidrun Gerzymisch's research interests focus on translation studies ( translatology ) as “averaged” communication with the question of the systematisability and transparency of its influencing variables and individual decision-making processes. Based on the averaged specialist communication and terminology theory, she developed a method for disambiguating the term in context and supplemented the terms of the subject-rhema structure , isotopic , context and coherence from a translational point of view. Together with her academic teacher, the physicist and linguist Klaus Mudersbach, she has developed a scientific method of translation based on his concept of dividends , which is continued by doctoral students of the chair and the doctoral college MuTra and theoretically supplemented by the operationalization of the translation purpose (2012 by June Sunwoo) were. In 1994, Heidrun Gerzymisch founded the Advanced Translation Research Center (ATRC) at Saarland University with research focus on terms and methods in translation studies (translatology). From 1999 to 2007 the ATRC hosted a series of Marie Curie Euroconferences with accompanying “PhD Schools”, which were integrated into the GradUS graduate program at Saarland University in 2010 with the doctoral college. In 1996 she founded the Gerzymisch Foundation for the promotion of young academics in translation and interpreting studies (translation studies), which promotes and supports young academics in their translational dissertation and publication projects. She is a co-founder of the German Society for Translation and Interpreting Studies and a reviewer for universities, national and international scientific organizations and associations, as well as for the European Commission's research framework program in 2008 and 2009.
