Sylvia Tyson b. Fricker (born September 19, 1940 in Chatham-Kent , Ontario ) is a Canadian singer-songwriter and guitarist .

Life

She was born Sylvia Fricker in Chatham-Kent, Ontario, Canada . Both her Canadian-American mother and Canadian father had musical training and were supportive of her when she expressed a desire to become a folk singer . In her birthplace this was not welcomed by the population, who were predominantly of the working class. So she took piano lessons and taught herself to play the guitar.

At 18, she left home and moved to Toronto, which at the time had many folk clubs and audiences. It was here that she met her future husband, Ian Tyson , with whom she soon appeared together until they were known enough to get a record deal.

They married in 1964 and their son Clay Tyson was born. The early days of marriage were overshadowed by bad deliberations and arguments. In addition, the spouses were extremely different in character. The marriage lasted over ten years.

During this time they became known with the folk bands Ian and Sylvia and Great Speckled Bird . One of the most famous songs of these groups comes from their pen: It is their first, written in 1962 under the influence of Bob Dylan , called You Were On My Mind . The song was later successfully covered by We Five (USA # 3) and Crispian St. Peters (UK # 2) and was also released in other language versions.

After the divorce, Sylvia Tyson continued her musical career with the all-female folk group quartets and as a solo artist. She was also a jury member of FACTOR (Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent on Records) and the Juno Awards . In the late 1970s, she founded an independent record label called Salt Music . In addition to her singing career, she worked on radio and television.
