Symbolon - Society for Scientific Symbol Research eV is an association that has made the scientific investigation of symbols in culture, science, art, myth and religion its task. The association is non-profit and acts as an association of scientists from all disciplines and those interested in questions of symbol science who deal with the field of symbolism in the context of multi-day symposia, one-day so-called symbol research groups and publications . Since 1960 the society has published the yearbook for symbol research " Symbolon ", which is published by Peter Lang Verlag and in which representatives of various subjects write interdisciplinary on topics related to symbols , signs , myths and mythology .

Research society

Since symbol research has not established itself as a scientific university subject and it is still desired in order to do justice to the interdisciplinary complexity of symbols, experts from a wide variety of fields conduct research, such as European art history, Asian art history, classical archeology and Egyptology , philosophy , psychology , and Islamic studies etc. together and in exchange with artists and representatives of various religious traditions. There are points of contact in particular with comparative religious studies and comparative mythology.

history

The company was founded in September 1955 a. a. Founded by Julius Schwabe and Manfred Lurker and has been a registered association since 1970. The Symbolon yearbooks have been published since 1960. The motto of the first conference in 1955 at the University of Basel was “microcosm - macrocosm”. The speakers were u. a. Theologians, religious researchers, ethnologists, Sino and Tibetologists, art historians, psychologists and harmonists . The Symbolon speakers and authors include the Egyptologist Erik Hornung , the Islamic scholar Annemarie Schimmel , the medieval expert Peter Dinzelbacher , the parapsychology researcher Walter von Lucadou , Titus Burckhardt , Friedrich Weinreb , Ingeborg Clarus . Members of the society are regularly available as specialists to provide advice to researchers and journalists for interviews in the media with a scientific level.
