Symphodus is a genus of wrasse found in the eastern Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea .
Most species of the genus reach maximum lengths of 12 to 20 centimeters; however, the species Symphodus melops and Symphodus tinca also reach a length of up to 28 and 44 centimeters, respectively. The oldest known specimens were four ( Symphodus rostratus ) to 15 years ( Symphodus tinca ) old. There is a sexual dimorphism . The males build shell-shaped nests and guard the eggs laid there by the females.

Danger
The IUCN assesses the condition of nine species as stable or, in the case of the three species bailloni , caeruleus and trutta, names it as unknown due to a lack of more detailed information .
