The scaly cheek wrasse ( Symphodus bailloni ) is a species of wrasse that can be found in the north and east Atlantic and the western Mediterranean.

features

The shed cheek wrasse has a laterally flattened, elongated-oval and high-backed body and reaches a body length of up to a maximum of 18 centimeters. The pointed head has a terminal and protruding mouth that forms the bulging lips typical of wrasse. The coloring shows a sexual dimorphism , the basic color of both being light brown-silvery with three darker stripes from the head to the base of the tail. Both sexes have in common a bar-like, black spot between the eye and the mouth and one or two dark spots on the rear edge of the dorsal fin. The females have a black genital papilla at spawning time, which the males lack.

The undivided dorsal fin has 14 to 15 hard rays and then 9 to 11 soft rays, the anal fin 3 hard and 9 to 11 soft rays. The pelvic fins are on the chest. A total of 33 to 38 scales lie along the sideline .

distribution

The scaly-cheeked wrasse can be found from the northeast Atlantic from the North Sea to North Africa in the area of Mauritania and the Mediterranean .

Way of life

The fish live in the area near the coast, algae-covered rocks or seagrass meadows at depths of up to 50 meters, where they occur individually or in pairs. They feed mainly on bog animals , tube worms , echinoderms , crustaceans and mollusks .

The scaly cheek wrasse is a Protogynous hermaphrodite , the initially female fish changes its sex accordingly and becomes a male animal. The breeding season of the fish extends from April to June. At this time, the males become territorial and build nests of plant material in shallow hollows on the sea floor.
