The synagogue of Biarritz , a French town in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine , was inaugurated 1904th The synagogue at No. 3 rue Pellot reopened in the summer of 2012 after extensive renovations.

history

The place, which developed into a seaside resort in the 19th century , attracted many wealthy families from France and other European countries. At the end of the 19th century, the number of Jewish guests is estimated at around 300 per year. Biarritz itself had about 100 Jewish residents. These and the Jewish holiday guests had to go to the synagogue in Bayonne or a private prayer room for their services . With the help of patrons such as Cécile Furtado-Heine , the construction of the synagogue could be financed, which was inaugurated in 1904. The Consistoire Bayonne hesitated for a long time to support the construction because it feared the weakening of the Jewish community in Bayonne. The Consistoire determined that the new synagogue in Biarritz would become a branch of the Bayonne synagogue.

architecture

The synagogue was built according to the plans of the Bayonne architect Charles Pasquier, who also built the casino in Biarritz . The new synagogue was not completed until after his death in 1903. The facade of the building, built in the oriental style , is divided into three parts. In the middle area there is a triple window above the portal and above it in the gable zone a large round window with a Star of David in the middle. The top of the gable is crowned by the tablets of the law . This central area is flanked by two lower side buildings.

The rectangular central prayer room has galleries on three sides with wooden balustrades for the women. The Torah shrine is framed by two columns with capitals and a blown triangular gable . The tablets of the law are in the triangular gable. The Torah shrine and parts of the furniture come from the synagogue in Peyrehorade , which was inaugurated in 1747 and after being sold by the Consistoire in 1898, it was demolished to widen a street.
