Kirn Synagogue

The synagogue in Kirn was built in 1887/88 at Amthofstraße 2. During the November pogroms in 1938 , the interior of the synagogue was devastated and burned in front of the synagogue. In 1950 the building was demolished and a cinema was built on the property.

synagogue

A prayer room had existed since 1870. It was located in the Übergasse in the back yard of a restaurant. In 1887 the construction of a new synagogue at Amthofstraße 2 began. The inauguration took place in 1888. The construction costs amounted to 30,000 marks and were raised through donations. The north gable was built directly onto the neighboring building. The entrance was on the southwest side of the building facing away from Amtshofstrasse and was accessible via a passage that was located between the south gable of the synagogue and the neighboring building. The north-west side facing the road was divided into four fields. The right and left fields each had a round arched window and above each a round tracery window . In each of the two inner fields there was a large tracery window. During the November pogroms in 1938, the synagogue was stormed by members of the SA and the NSDAP . The interior was completely destroyed and burned together with the cult objects, books and writings outside the synagogue. Since it was feared that the flames would spread to neighboring houses, the synagogue was not set on fire. In April 1939 the Jewish community was forced to sell the building and the property to the Kirn community for 5,358 RM . After the community of Kirn had paid 4000 DM to the Jewish community of Bad Kreuznach as part of the restitution proceedings in 1950 , the building was demolished and a cinema was built on the property.

Kirn Jewish Community

Jews are mentioned in the area of Kirn as early as the Middle Ages . The plague pogroms in the years 1348-1351 wiped out Jewish life in the community. It was not until the middle of the 19th century that a Jewish community was formed again in Kirn. The existence of the community ended with the deportation of the last Jewish inhabitants in 1942. The community had a mikveh and a religious school. At times a separate teacher was employed who also took on the duties of prayer and shochet . The deceased were buried in the Jewish cemetery in Kirn.
