Hundsbach synagogue

The synagogue in Hundsbach was built in 1881 at Untergasse 9. In 1930 the synagogue was sold to a farmer. From 1945 it served as a warehouse. In 1987 the building was listed and converted into a residential building that is still in use today.

synagogue

Even before 1866 there was a synagogue of the Jewish community at Untergasse 9. While this was only damaged by a fire in 1866, the damage caused by the fire in a neighboring house in 1880 was so great that a new building was necessary. The new synagogue was inaugurated in August 1881. From the beginning of the 20th century, since the required minyan was no longer achieved, no more services were held in Hundsbach and the synagogue was given up. From this point on, the Jewish residents attended the services in the Sien synagogue . In 1930 the Jewish community sold the property with the synagogue to a farmer who used the building as a warehouse. From 1945 it was used as a warehouse for the Raiffeisen cooperative. In 1987 the building was placed under a preservation order and in the same year it was converted into a residential building that is still in use today.

Hundsbach Jewish community

The Jewish community existed from the 18th century until the 1930s. The community had a mikveh and a religious school. At times, a separate religion teacher was employed, who also performed the duties of prayer leader and shochet . The deceased were buried in the Jewish cemetery in Hundsbach. The community belonged to the Meisenheim rabbinical district .
