The synagogue in Romrod , a town in the Vogelsberg district in Hesse , is located in a house built in 1722 as a rural residential and farm building. The former synagogue on Schlossallee was renovated from 2001 to 2006 in accordance with a listed building.

history

The Jews in Romrod first attended the services in Angenrod and Alsfeld . In 1837 the Jewish community of Romrod bought a rural property and in the following years converted it into a synagogue with a classroom, teacher's apartment and ritual bath ( mikveh ). The synagogue hall with a women's gallery on the upper floor was housed in the former barn . The ritual bath was set up in a chamber to the northeast of it. The renovation was led by the district architect Sonnemann, who also designed the classical synagogue furnishings. The inauguration took place on September 16, 1843.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the number of Jewish parishioners decreased so much that worship services could no longer be held since the mid-1930s. The last four members of the Jewish community sold the building in October 1935 to a farmer who used the former synagogue as a barn and warehouse.

In 1988 the city of Romrod bought the former synagogue and renovated the building between 2001 and 2006. On June 16, 2006, the restored synagogue was opened as a former synagogue cultural center . It has been used for cultural events ever since. The interior of the synagogue with the substructure of the Torah shrine and the gallery was also preserved and restored .
