Synagogue (Simmern)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The synagogue in Simmern , the district town of the Rhein-Hunsrück district in Rhineland-Palatinate , was a synagogue that was built in 1911 and destroyed during the November pogroms in 1938 . The synagogue was at 3 Hunsgasse.

history

A first synagogue was probably built around 1800 in the Hunsgasse. In 1911 the Jewish community in Simmern had the old synagogue and the adjacent shaft demolished in order to build the new synagogue on the same site.

The plans for the synagogue were drawn up by master builder Emil Klein from Simmern. The foundation stone was laid on May 29, 1911 and the inauguration took place on November 17 of the same year.

architecture

The gable-facing plastered construction on a rubble base is influenced by Art Nouveau . Eck pilaster strip of hewn stone and a tooth fries under the profiled Traufgesims framed the facade. On the east facade, the semicircular Torah bay , structured by three round-arched blind niches, was visible. It was flanked on both sides by a window and above it was a staggered triple window, above which there was a round window with a Star of David . This gable was crowned by the tablets of the law . The following inscription was clearly visible on the gable: My house is to be called a house of prayer for all the peoples of the earth ( Isaiah 56: 7). All windows, including the four tall and four narrow ones on the long sides, were closed off in a circle.

time of the nationalsocialism

During the November pogrom in 1938, the synagogue was set on fire by an external SA troop and burned down completely. The ruin was demolished in 1950.

Commemoration

In 1988 a memorial in memory of the synagogue was inaugurated in front of the castle in Simmern .
