The synagogue in Dolní Kounice (German Kanitz ), a town in the Okres Brno-venkov in the Czech Republic , was built in 1652. The derelict synagogue has been a protected cultural monument since 2008 .

history

The old synagogue in Dolní Kounice, near the old Jewish cemetery, was destroyed by Swedish troops in the Thirty Years' War in 1645. A few years later the Jewish community set up a new synagogue in the ghetto . Presumably an older prayer room was rebuilt. The portal bears the year 1652. During the 18th century the interior was renovated and decorated with floral ornaments and Hebrew wall inscriptions.

The interior of the synagogue, which was closed during the German occupation in 1940/41, was brought to the Jewish Museum in Prague.

Todays use

The synagogue building, built in the early baroque style, which served as a storage room in the post-war period, was restored in the 1990s and has served as a cultural center since 2004.
