history

The synagogue building, donated by the landowners Simon and Cäcilie Spitzer, was built according to plans by the architect Wilhelm Stiassny . In 1899 the building with today's address Na brehu 2 was almost completely destroyed by fire and rebuilt by the same architect until 1900. Next to the synagogue there was a no longer existing house for the synagogue servant . The synagogue building has been used as an art school since the 1980s.

description

The synagogue was the first in Slovakia in the orientalizing style. It has a facade with two domed tower stumps. The domes are just by a high rim cornice deposited, whose center with the law panels is decorated. A large portal and a three-part window dominate the central wing. The two protruding, tower-like side wings are emphasized by large domes. Upstairs is the shape of the three-part window with repeated horseshoe arches on both sides of projections in a smaller version. The entrances for women on the two side wings take the form of the main portal. The synagogue offered space for 400 people. Of the three entrance doors, the middle one leads to the vestibule and the ground floor and the two side doors to the women's gallery . The women's gallery running around three sides was supported by six decorative polychrome columns with capitals . The Torah shrine with a grape pattern was located in the eastern niche and was crowned by a rosette.
