The former synagogue

The secular synagogue in Wielowieś ( Langendorf ) dates from 1771 and is located on ul. Gminna . It is the oldest surviving synagogue building in Upper Silesia .

history

The synagogue was built between 1763 and 1771 on the site of an older wooden synagogue. The construction was financed by Jews who had emigrated abroad.

The synagogue was bought by a Langendorf citizen before the November pogroms in 1938, which meant that it escaped major damage and the building could be preserved. During the night of November 9-10, 1938, the interior of the synagogue was demolished and set on fire, but due to ownership and threats from the owner, the fires were put out again.

However, the Jewish symbols were subsequently removed by the National Socialists and the tower with dome and Star of David torn down.

After the Second World War, the synagogue building was converted into a grain store by the new Polish communist administration and an outbuilding was added to the former main entrance. The building is currently unused. The shape of the former synagogue windows can still be seen on the facade.

A parochet from 1783 has been preserved from the interior. After 1945 it was in private hands and has been part of the collection of the Żydowski Instytut Historyczny Museum in Warsaw since 1977 .
