The synagogue in Kirchen , a district of the Efringen-Kirchen community in the Lörrach district in Baden-Württemberg , was built in 1831. The synagogue was on the property behind Basler Strasse 57 and the corner of Friedrich-Rottra-Strasse.

History and description

In the new building there was also the teacher's or cantor's apartment on the upper floor and the school and the mikveh (ritual bath) in a neighboring building . The Weinbrenner- style synagogue had two pylon-like towers with flat, pyramid-shaped tops on the front. The vestibule was reached via four steps. Above the portal was the Hebrew inscription from Psalm 118.20 : “This is the gate to the Lord, the righteous enter through it” with the year (5) 591 according to Jewish counting (= 1831).

Inside there was a two-part women's gallery . The paneling of the Torah shrine was made of dark red marbled wood, flanked by two pillars. After the renovation in 1896, the synagogue had around 60 places in the men's prayer room and 30 places in the women's gallery.

During the November pogrom in 1938 , the synagogue was destroyed by an NSDAP party formation from Haltingen . The ruins were further damaged when the church was bombarded in 1940 and demolished in 1945. Today only a one meter high and eight meter long wall remains. The synagogue site is used as a parking space and as a garden.

Commemoration

A memorial stone has been commemorating the former synagogue since 1996.
