Former synagogue in Ober-Erlenbach

The profaned synagogue in Ober-Erlenbach , a district of Bad Homburg vor der Höhe in the Hochtaunus district in Hesse , still stands today at Bornstrasse 14 and is a listed building .

building

In the period around 1855 there was a synagogue in the small house with a courtyard (86 m²) that has probably existed for a long time . The exact year of construction and the time of the rededication to a place of worship are unknown. The ritual bath is said to have been in the neighboring building at the rear.

After the First World War, the use as a synagogue was given up and the services in the neighboring community of Rodheim vor der Höhe were attended. The building was rebuilt and rented for residential purposes, from 1924 to the political municipality. In 1935 it was expropriated without compensation in favor of the political community.

In the restitution proceedings after 1945, the JRSO (Jewish Restitution Successor Organization) sold the property to a private individual.

Since 1988 there has been a memorial plaque on the building , which reminds of its earlier use as a synagogue.

Jewish community

In the 17th / 18th A few Jewish families will have lived in Ober-Erlenbach by the 19th century . A separate community existed in the 19th century. Five Jewish families are known for the year 1812. In 1877 the Jewish community - together with Ober- and Nieder-Eschbach - comprised 49 people.

The deceased were buried in the Jewish cemetery in Burgholzhausen vor der Höhe .

Around 1924 the Jewish community in Ober-Erlenbach dissolved itself. The remaining five Jews joined the community in Rodheim. After 1933 only the Jordan family lived in Ober-Erlenbach . They had a general store on Bornstrasse; Its setting on fire during the Reichskristallnacht could be prevented by the intervention of a Petterweiler citizen. In 1941 the family had to move to the former synagogue and - with the exception of their son Heinz, who was able to emigrate to South America in the winter of 1939 - were deported to Theresienstadt on September 16, 1942. A stele with a plaque commemorates their deportation.
