The synagogue Reims is located in the city of Reims in the Marne department in the French region of Grand Est . The address of the synagogue is 49, rue Clovis.

history

The synagogue in Reims was built in 1878/79 by the architect Ernest Brunette , son of the famous Reims architect Narcisse Brunette . After the German annexation of Alsace-Lorraine after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71, many Jews from these areas settled in Reims. As a result, the Jewish community of Reims reached almost 650 members around 1875 and the old synagogue at 7, rue des Capucins, became too small.

Above the portal is the verse from Genesis (28:17) in Hebrew : This is the house of God and the gate of heaven . The orientalizing style elements, as in the synagogue of Épernay , were the fashion of the time. Inside there are again horseshoe arches and a rich decoration. In 1901 an organ by Augustin Brisset from Reims was installed, a sign of the progressiveness of the Jewish community.

Since 1989, the Synagogue of Reims is worthy of protection monument ( monument historique ). The synagogue is still used today for worship in the Sephardic rite, because the parishioners come exclusively from North Africa .

A stele was erected in front of the synagogue in 1949 for the 226 deported and murdered Jews from Reims and the surrounding area.
