The synagogue in the city center (Romanian: Sinagoga din Cetate , also: Sinagoga Cultului Mozaic Neolog ), also called the synagogue in the fortress or synagogue of the Neological Mosaic Cult , is a listed historical building and a former synagogue in the center of the I. District of Cetate in western Romania City of Timișoara , at Strada Mărășești No. 6.
history
As early as the middle of the 18th century, the German and Spanish Jews in Timisoara had a house of prayer, which was replaced with a temple in 1760. The synagogue from the fortress was built between 1863 and 1865 according to plans by the Viennese architect Ignatz Schumann in an eclectic style with elements of the Moorish style and Romanticism . The synagogue, which is connected to the Neolog rite, resembles the appearance of the Great Synagogue in Oran , Algeria , and has a capacity of approx. 3000 visitors. It is one of the largest synagogues in Europe. The new synagogue was consecrated on September 19, 1865. Emperor Franz Josef I visited the monumental building on May 7, 1872 during his stay in what was then Timisoara County.
Mauritius Löwy was the synagogue's rabbi from 1879 to 1908 ; he was followed by Maximilian Drechsler in office until 1970 .
The synagogue had to be closed in 1985 due to the dwindling number of parishioners and the ongoing deterioration of the building. The interior paintings have now almost completely faded, the walls have been badly damaged by the ingress of rainwater, and vandalizing burglars have contributed to the poor condition of the former prayer house. The Timișoara Philharmonic Society has obtained the right of use for 50 years since 2001 and regularly organizes concerts and collections for the renovation of the building. According to a feasibility study commissioned by UNESCO , the cost of the renovation is 2.5 million US dollars. The management of the Philharmonic intends to set up a multifunctional auditorium for concerts, theater performances, conferences and exhibitions.

organ
The prayer house from 1760 already had an organ , but the builder is not known. This instrument was first integrated into the new synagogue, and then presumably sold in 1899 to the Hadad community ( German war village ) in Transylvania . The disposition of the former organ was as follows:

In 1899, Carl Leopold Wegenstein from Timisoara delivered a larger organ with 2 manuals and a pedal for the synagogue. It is given in the Wegenstein catalog of works under number 29. This instrument has a pneumatic action and 19 stops. Due to the condition of the building and several break-ins, in which the action was damaged, parts of the case were destroyed and the metal pipes were stolen, the instrument is now unplayable. The disposition is as follows:
