The Syneta was a tanker for cooking oil that crashed on Christmas 1986 in the east fjords of Iceland .

The ship was built in 1969 at the Swedish Falkenberg shipyard as Marga . It was 72.10 meters long and 11.60 meters wide. In 1971 it was lengthened by 13.80 meters. In 1977 the ship was renamed Margareta . Since 1985, the ship was British and registered in Gibraltar under the name Syneta .

bad luck

The Syneta left Liverpool on December 20, 1986 . There were twelve people on board. Five officers and the cook came from Great Britain , and six other crew members from the Cape Verde Islands . The ship should first go to Heimaey on the Vestmannaeyjar . Then, however, the decision was made to call at Eskifjörður first to load 1,100 t of fish oil.

Around 10:15 p.m. on December 25, the first emergency call was picked up : “Ran aground north of Seley , sinking, require immediate assistance.” However, this island was 10 km north-northeast of the actual location. There was a snowstorm and rough seas. At around 1:30 a.m. the first ship arrived at the scene of the accident on the island of Skrúður . Twelve more ships and a rescue helicopter followed. You could make out nine bodies in the water, but only bring seven on board. Two sailors slid down from their life jackets. None of the crew survived the accident. Four British people were transferred to their homeland. Three Cape Verdean sailors were buried in the Gufunes cemetery in Reykjavík . Five sailors were missing.

The accident was negotiated in 1987 in Hull . It could not be determined who was on watch on the ship at the time. A letter was found on a crew member stating that the autopilot was defective and that a maximum speed of 5 KN could only be achieved.

The accident was the shipwreck with the highest number of victims since 1950 off Iceland.

Trivia

In 1990 Bubbi published a title Syneta on his CD Sögur af landi , which describes the shipwreck from the point of view of an injured seaman.
