The Szafraniec Chapel is one of the 19 chapels that surround the Kraków Cathedral . It is also called the Doctors' Chapel, the Academic Chapel and the Radziwiłł Chapel. It is consecrated to St. Stephen .
history
The chapel was donated by Bishop Jan Szafraniec in 1420 and built into the ground floor of the Romanesque silver bell tower , which previously served as the chapter house . His brother, the subcamerarius Piotr Szafraniec, was also buried in the chapel. Both also donated a Gothic altar for the chapel. At the beginning of the 17th century the Kraków Academy took over the chapel and it was converted into a university chapel and in 1655 it was given a new baroque vault. Finally, between 1692 and 1702, Sebastian Piskorski rebuilt it entirely in the baroque style. The late baroque portal was donated by Antoni Żołędziowski in 1769 and built by Francesco Placidi . Placidi also created the baroque altar. The last reconstruction in the neo-baroque style was donated by the Radziwiłł magnate family in the years from 1902 to 1906. Zygmunt Hendel (bronze grille) and Józef Mehoffer (frescoes) were involved in this.
crypt
The following were buried in the crypt below the chapel:
- Piotr Szafraniec
- Cardinal Jerzy Radziwiłł (1556–1600)
The Józef Piłsudskis crypt is located in the immediate vicinity of these graves .
inner space
Francesco Placidi also created the baroque altar. The neo-baroque tomb of Jerzy Radziwiłłs goes back to Pius Weloński . The bronze grille was created by Zygmunt Hendel and Józef Mehoffer, the Art Nouveau frescoes and the stained glass window. In the chapel there are also numerous Baroque epitaphs for professors from the Cracow Academy.
