Szmul Potasznik
Szmul Potasznik (born April 5, 1909 in Kielce , † September 9 , 1943 in Schaerbeek ) was a Belgian Marxist resistance fighter of Polish - Jewish descent and was a victim of the Nazi regime .
Life
After Potasznik went to Belgium, he worked at the Free University of Brussels . Here he was in connection with Hersch Sokol one of the leading Polish Marxists at the university.
During the Second World War he belonged to a Jewish partisan group as part of the Belgian partisan army. He participated in several acts of sabotage , combined with the blackmail and killing of collaborators . With the money squeezed out by them, Potasznik, Maurice Rozencwajg and Wolf Weichman financed the resistance. A bounty of 500,000 Belgian francs was then announced. On February 16, 1943, he was arrested together with Rozencwaig and Weichmann in Saint-Gilles . He was sentenced to ten years of forced labor, but the sentence was later commuted to death . He was executed at the national shooting range on September 9, 1943. He was buried there that same day. His grave is in the grove of honor of the executed.
