Tälmen ( Estonian Swedish ; Estonian Telmen or Telmeni saar ) is an Estonian Baltic Sea island belonging to the Moonsund Group . It is located in the Hullo Bay (Estonian Hullo laht, Swedish Hulloviken ) south of the fourth largest Estonian island Vormsi ( German Worms , Swedish Ormsö ). The uninhabited island has an area of about 12.7 hectares and its highest point is 1.7 m above sea level. The distance to the Rumpo peninsula is about 1500 meters, the port of Svibyis three kilometers as the crow flies .

The area of the bay is designated as a protected area, the island no longer belongs to the "exclusion zone", but may not be entered from March to July. The bay and island are part of the Vormsi Protected Landscape Area (Vormsi maastikukaitseala). Tälmen and their larger neighboring island Pasilaid (Swedish Pasja ), 200 meters to the east, lie on the southern border of the protected area and are also the largest islands after the Rumpo peninsula.

Administratively, the island belongs to the village of Rumpo (Rumpo küla) of the rural municipality of Vormsi (Vormsi vald). Swedes settled the island of Ormsö since the 13th century . The Estonian Swedish name is difficult to interpret, it could be in two parts. Teln could thus describe the location of the island while Mäln is the Swedish name of the island of Seasaar . The Estonian name Telmen is recorded for the year 1939.

The vegetation on the valleys is characterized by coastal meadows and dry grasslands with a great diversity of species. Juniper heather and small pines only take up a small area. At last count in 2012 from 10 to 15 species of birds with 30-50 breeding pairs occur on Tälmen, among which are Gadwall , reed warbler , redshank , barred warbler , red-backed shrike , yellow wagtail , Skylark and Sedge Warbler . The bird population largely depends on whether the fox stays on the island in spring or leaves it via the ice. While extensive hay was mowed or sheep were kept in the second half of the 20th century, the island's biodiversity is now endangered by bush encroachment. Reeds spread in the bank zone .

The Estonian environmental authority Keskkonnaamet has drawn up a ten-year plan to rehabilitate the near-natural habitats in the years 2017 to 2026 and to preserve the open landscapes. The restoration of coastal meadows on valleys and pasilaid is a top priority. The shore zone should also be looked after. In order to achieve a sufficient grazing load, at least 50 sheep or 10 cattle are required for valleys.
