history

The symbolic congress

The Ministry of Defense , which now manages the facility, announced an architectural competition in 1981. The proposal by architects Özgür Ecevit and Ekrem Gürenli won the bid, and after six years of construction, the cemetery was opened with a state ceremony in August 1988.

The cemetery is not only a resting place, but is also equipped with monuments to the (pre) history of the republic. Following the design, these are kept relatively abstract and pompous as an Islamic interpretation. They surround the actual facility, which consists of a street, the so-called Straße der Republik , which leads to a ceremonial square. This is provided with a pillar-supported roof structure to protect against the weather and solar radiation. The complex also contains a small museum with souvenirs of the deceased.

While previously only presidents were allowed to be buried, in 2006, following a change in the law, the burial of prime ministers and parliamentary speakers was also permitted. So far, Bülent Ecevit has been buried there as the only Prime Minister in 2006.

All persons who died before the construction of the grave complex were reburied in the state cemetery with the consent of the families and according to a list of criteria. Not all graves contain the dead, and in some cases they were not reburied. These symbolic graves are marked “empty” in the list below.
