In the vicinity of Lautém, cave drawings were found that are thought to be several thousand years old. An exact dating has not yet been carried out.

In 2015, while a house was being built on the Raumoco River in Daudere, a bronze drum of the Dong Son culture from what is now Vietnam was discovered . The 80 kg heavy and approximately 2000 year old artifact is one of the best preserved of only about 20 bronze drums that were found along the ancient shipping lanes in Southeast Asia.

The historical empire of Sarau was located in Malailada , which was one of the dominant empires in the area of today's Lautém municipality in the 18th and 19th centuries.

A remnant from the colonial era is a Portuguese residence from the 18th or 19th century in Lautém, which is surrounded by gardens with fountains. In addition, a former church, buildings for the servants and barracks stand on the hill. From here you can see as far as the Banda Sea. The area is surrounded by a wall in which you can still see the loopholes for the cannons. The Japanese occupiers during the Second World War also left their mark on the residence.

On February 7, 1944, 14 B-24s of the Australian Air Force bombed the Japanese in Lautém.

After East Timor's declaration of independence in 1975 , Indonesia began a large-scale invasion of the neighboring country. Until October 1976, the place Lautém and the connecting road to Lospalos were under Indonesian control, but it was not until 1977 that East Timor was also occupied in the area. In the same year, the residents of Com surrendered to the Indonesian Battalion 512. They were immediately interned on the beach for a week and then deported to Parlameno, where they were amalgamated with other interned civilians from all over the Lautém district . None of the 2,000 prisoners were allowed to move more than 100 meters from the camp, and there was no food supply by the Indonesian armed forces . Two to five people died every day. It was only when an Indonesian warship docked in Lautém harbor that some internees were given two cans of rice a day for their work unloading the ship.

During the Indonesian Operation Donner in 1999, all public facilities were destroyed. On September 25, 1999, members of the pro-Indonesian militia Team Alfa, led by Joni Marques, murdered nine people on the road from Lautém to Baucau, on the Malailada River . Among the victims were two nuns, three fathers and an Indonesian journalist.
