Tērvete (German Hofzumberg , partly a. Hofzumberge ) is a town in southern Latvia and namesake of the administrative unit of the same name (Tērvetes novads).
history
Tērvete (Latin: provincia, que Thervetene vocatur) was one of the last bases of the Semgallians in the fight against the Crusaders . After 1286 the place name disappeared. The place name was "Kalnmuiža", the Latvian variant of the local estate " Hof zum Berge ". In the 1930s it was named today.
The local kolkhoz was privatized in 1992 and operates horse breeding, plant cultivation and a well-known brewery . In 2015 the population was 393 people.
- The theologian and enlightener Christoph Friedrich Neander (1723-1802), who translated books into the Latvian language, was a pastor in Grenzhof (today Aukstkalne) and died there too.
- The author Anna Brigadere (1861–1933) owned a water mill here, which is now a museum.
- Pastors Arnold von Rutkowski (1865–1919) and Wilhelm Gilbert (1868–1919), who later died as martyrs, were born here.
Tērvetes novads
In 2002 the municipalities of Tērvete, Augskalne and Bukaiši merged as part of an administrative reform. The administration buildings are located in Zelmeņi. On July 1, 2010, 4088 inhabitants were registered. The largest towns are Kroņauce, Augstkalne, Bukaiši, Tērvete, Zelmeņi, Klūnas, Dzeguzēni and Mežmalieši. The Auce flows through the district .
