The Timbarra River is a river in eastern Gippsland in the Australian state of Victoria .
It rises on the Nunniong Plains , about 30 km east of Omeo on the Great Dividing Range and then flows 90 km south to its confluence with the Tambo River about 10 km southeast of Tambo Crossing .
River course
The Timbarra River flows mainly through forested mountainous lands and deep valleys. Its bed consists of gravel , rubble and mud and has many pools . The small town of Timbarra is located on the river , about 30 km southwest of Buchan .
The river is part of the Tambo-Nicholson Basin and one of the larger tributaries of the Tambo River. The main tributaries of the Timbarra River are the Wilkinson Creek and the Back River .
The remote Timbarra River Gorge , a canyon eight kilometers north of Timbarra, has been classified as a major geological formation by the Geological Society of Australia .
Ecology and recreation
The Timbarra River is in good ecological condition and carries water all year round.
Access to the river bank is difficult, but the Timbarra River is a popular fishing spot, especially for catching brown trout brought in from Europe , which naturally spawn in the river . Native fish in the river are the sensitive Australian trout pike ( Prototroctes maraena , Australian grayling) from the New Zealand salmon family , the codfish Gadopsis marmoratus (river blackfish), the catadrome ice fish Pseudaphritis urvillii (tupong) and eels .
One of the sports houses at Swifts Creek Secondary College was named after the Timbarra River.
