Christoph Friedrich Neander (born December 28, 1723 in Eckau , Duchy of Courland and Semgallia ; † July 9, 1802 in Grenzhof, Doblen District , Courland Governorate , Russian Empire ) was a Protestant pastor and hymn poet .

Life

After studying Protestant theology in Halle (Saale) Neander was initially tutor in Kurland, 1751, he was in Kabillen ordained . From 1756 he worked as a pastor in Grenzhof / Kurland and Kuckern, from 1775 as provost of the Doblen diocese and assessor of the Kurland consistory . In 1785 he refused the appointment to become superintendent of Courland .

Neander was a member of the Masonic lodge founded by Samuel von Brukenthal to the three golden keys in Halle . On May 13, 1744 he became an apprentice and journeyman there on the same day, and on June 1, 1744 he was promoted to master craftsman.

Neander's poems and songs are influenced by Christian Fürchtegott Gellert and Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock . In Courland , advocating moderate rationalism , he advocated the abolition of private confession. He translated songs into Latvian which were included in the Latvian hymnbook . The collection of hymns he published in 1773 was evidence of the influence of the Enlightenment in Courland under Duke Peter . The draft for a new church order in the spirit of the Enlightenment , which was elaborated by Neander in 1778 and printed in 1786 . a. the establishment of church relief for the poor and the creation of regular classes for Latvian children was not officially introduced.
