The Icon Vienna is a multifunctional office complex on the area of the new Vienna Central Station in the Quartier Belvedere : 10th district , Wiedner Gürtel 9–13 and Gertrude-Fröhlich-Sandner-Straße 2–4.

history

On the one hand, the new Vienna Central Station , connecting the southern, eastern and Laaer Ostbahn, was built on the area of the former southern station . On the other hand, two new districts were or are being built here - the Belvedere quarter and the Sonnwendviertel . At the Quartier Belvedere site, u. a. The Icon Vienna built.

In 2012, the SIGNA company acquired construction site A.01 - later renamed The Icon Vienna - from the Austrian Federal Railways  (ÖBB). The designation of the construction site on the part of ÖBB (A.01) indicates the special location of this project within the overall project area, it is the city center-side parcel right next to the train station. As a result, an international architecture competition was held, from which the building in question emerged as the winner. It was designed by JSWD Architects , Cologne, in collaboration with BEHF Corporate Architects , Vienna. The Werner Sobek office with offices in Stuttgart, New York and Moscow was responsible for the facade planning.

The jury of the architecture competition particularly praised “the choice of the building structure, its permeability on the ground floor and the clarity and correctness in the orientation of the building structure.” They also found the organization of the three structures relative to one another, the differentiation of the formulation of the facade and the opening as convincing to city. An appealing basement zone creates a public meeting space as a link to the neighboring properties and the main train station.

The construction of The Icon Vienna began in November 2015 and was completed in 2019.

At the end of 2016, Bawag PSK signed a long-term lease for around 28,000 m² in The Icon Vienna. The Austrian tax consultancy and auditing company TPA Group signed a long-term lease for around 8,600 m² in July 2017. At the end of December 2017, the world's largest food company, Nestlé, signed a long-term lease for around 3,800 m². Nestlé Austria and its subsidiary Nespresso Austria have moved their new headquarters to The Icon Vienna. Procter & Gamble, the world's largest consumer goods company, moved its Austrian headquarters to the 6th floor of Tower C. The lease was signed in 2018 for a period of 15 years.

architecture

Three towers were built with heights of 88 m, 66 m and 38.5 m, which are connected to one another via a common base zone. The Icon Vienna has office rental space of around 74,200 m². The building has direct access to the tracks of the Vienna Central Station.

criticism

A citizens' initiative, with the support of UNESCO, has spoken out against the size of the project, as this would have a negative impact on the cityscape: it is in the immediate field of vision of the UNESCO World Heritage Historic Center of Vienna . The criticism resulted in the reduction of the construction height from 100 meters to 88 meters.
